# How to Use Your Car Headlights at Night Oh, it’s dark outside! You’ve turned on your headlights, but they aren’t illuminating the road well. You probably need to adjust them. It sounds like a pain, but it only takes one minute and is really easy if you follow these directions. 1) Turn off your car engine and put on the parking brake. Make sure your car is in park or neutral if you’ve got an automatic transmission; if not, put it in neutral. 2) Open the driver’s door and put on your emergency flashers. This will let other drivers know that you’re working on your headlights. 3) Go around to the engine compartment at the front of your car and locate a lever or a knob on each headlight. On some cars, it’s a knob; on others, it may be a lever. If you can’t find it quickly, check the manual that came with your car or ask someone who knows about cars. Turn these adjusting knobs or levers about ten clicks clockwise to increase the brightness of your headlights, and turn them counterclockwise to dim them down. If you open one headlight, adjust that one. Repeat step three for the other headlight. If you turn too much, your headlights may become dim again as they come up out of the "night shift" position. That’s okay. Just turn back a little bit and go from there—and try not to go too far from where you started! When you’re done, reengage your parking brake and make sure your emergency flashers are still on. If you have very dim headlights, turn them down a little bit more. You can always turn them up if you need to drive during the day! You may have headlights that are too bright, even when your engine is off. That’s okay too! Just tighten another screw on the body of the headlight assembly—or another one for each headlight—and they should become much more subdued. Make absolutely sure the gap between the glass and the inside of the headlight is exactly level. If you’re having trouble with your headlights, you may want to consult a mechanic.
